Grant often tells people, “The Nicot kit is not the perfect method to raise queens; but neither is it the only way. It is what it is, but it becomes what we make it. It holds tremendous potential for the average beekeeper to take control of their genetics and shape, even reshape the destiny of their apiaries.”

In essence, that is Grant’s purpose for raising his own queens, particularly in an era of “natural” beekeeping, managing our colonies with reduced and minimalistic treatments, and breeding our own locally-adapted queens from survivor stock. Grant wanted better queens than he was buying from the large, commercial queen producers in the south.
He felt the Nicot system created the best opportunities, and lowered the bar for those beekeepers who didn’t know how to graft.

Grant adds, “My journey raising my own queens covers a number of seasons, more than I can count at this point. I readily admit I’m not the sharpest crayon in the box but I’ve learned to keep on coloring, even if most of my work can’t stay within the lines.”

There’s an old bit of advice that suggests real education is learning from our mistakes. Yet the best, most efficient education learns from the mistakes of others, and more so, it doesn’t take near as long and it’s generally not quite as expensive. Grant readily admits he's made many mistakes, especially in queen rearing.

As a senior in high school, my son took the ACT for the first time and got a 24. The second time he took it he got a 25. He didn't do any additional prepping that time so that extra point was probably just from knowing what to expect and help time himself better. The 25 wasn't going to get him the scholarship money he/we need for him to start college in the fall so I bought The Real ACT based on the good reviews. I only purchased the book - not the DVD. He only had it for about 2 months and on the 3rd time he tested he brought up his score from a 25 to 29, which was high enough to get the school's Presidential Merit Scholarship (the highest one he/we were aiming for). He's good to go with this, but I wonder if he could do even better had he had the book longer. It's a moot point now for him, but I'll definitely be buying an updated edition in my younger child's sophomore year so he has plenty of time to get through the book, cover to cover.

I am a private math tutor and author of the Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT.I gave this book five stars because it has the best practice tests. However the content is identical to previous editions, even the page numbers have not changed! The only difference is that there are two additional practice tests included here (one I recognize as the test from December 2008). The bottom line is that you get a better value by spending $21.50 for five practice tests in this third edition versus spending $20 for the first three practice tests in the earlier editions (Amazon prices as of 8/25/11).An even better deal is to scroll up this page to the box called "Formats" in orange letters. Click on the Paperback link and get the book without the CD. The material on the CD is not very helpful and getting just the paperback will save you a few dollars.UPDATE AS OF MAY 4, 2013: Amazon has made it slightly more difficult to find the book without the CD. Scroll up the page to where it says "Formats" in orange letters. Then click on the plus sign to the left of the "Paperback" link to expand it. Then click on the link that says "Paperback, September 6, 2011."UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 2014: Amazon is pricing the book with the CD to be 42 cents less than the book without the CD. Loved this book! My friends who took expensive prep courses recommended that I just take tons of practice test... so I bought this book. Anyway, this guide is formatted exactly like the real ACT. Books like Princeton Review or Barron's are different from the real thing, so I recommend using this instead. I made a 32. Good luck to all!

The book has 5 legitimate ACT tests, with fully explained answers to each test.My junior year I took the ACT with the rest of my class, and got composite: 25, English: 25, Math: 28, Reading: 26, Science: 19My senior year I took the ACT again midyear, studying the Real ACT a month prior to the test, and got Composite: 28, English: 33, Math: 32, Reading: 25, Science: 22.Similar to many others, I hate standardized tests. But, a big way to prepare for them is by taking the right classes senior year. My senior year included an English 101 writing course, and pre-calculus. Both classes greatly helped me improve in their respective studies.If you want to improve your reading score, this book will NOT help you. Reading for speed is something you build with practice, and reading for different elements of literature is something you build by taking a moment to reflect on text you read. I did not read much during my senior year, so I must admit the ACT score accurately reflects that.Unfortunately, I have no advice for Science. You can love physics, or admire chemistry and biology if not all three, but that does not mean anything on the ACT Science test.Happy testing!

An incredible study guide for high school students taking the ACT. It has 5 previously administered tests, and 2 new tests that you can take! Not only does it have them, but it details how the answer was obtained. So it's great for the Math section! You're not going into the test blind if you go through this book. It will also explain how the writing test is scored which is great! Most people think they can just go in and easily complete the writing prompt, but that is not the case. So reading the tips in this book are highly encouraged for better test results!

This is an excellent book to study for the ACT. Although it is a 2011 book, the content is all the same except for minor changes in the reading section. This book goes perfectly along the Black Book written by Mike Barret. It goes over answer explanations and provides strategies and shortcuts to tackle hard questions in the red book. Overall, great book for studying and well worth your money.

It really went into depth on every subject and had so much use in taking the ACT to prep for college.
